One reason it has become so popular is the ways it sets itself apart from other racing games, not least of which is the acrobatic and stunt-inducing stadium environment.
TRACKMANIA 2 STADIUM COULD NOT CONTACT SERVER FREE
TM Nations Forever has literally millions of users (just under 10 million registered accounts) which is very impressive, even for a free game. I haven't tried too many tracks yet, but it seems to be more given to "realistic" racing than previous environments.Īnd that in itself may be a problem. The canyon environment is quite interesting, and very visually beautiful. I'm not a huge fan of that, but I can live with it. The way it handles, and the way the tracks are made, they should have named it DriftMania, since it all seems to be about drifting now. So far I like it very much overall, but I'm not all that keen on the new car. I've been playing the multiplayer beta a bit for the past two weeks, but I've really been looking forward to the singleplayer part, the better to be able to drive a specific track however many times I want, with only my own time to beat. I considered that as a huge spit in the face of the community. So, TM2 was finally released today. Shootmania Storm (that's a whole different story here) had -40% all the time, but TM² Stadium had -35% for some hours in the beginning, and TM² Canyon had -50% for 4 hours ONLY. And it was enough to maintain the interest in the game for years and years.Īnd talking about Steam, Trackmania² environments were the only games in the Ubisoft catalog NOT to be in sale during the Summer Sale. In United Forever, there were a multitude of websites that provided everything the gamers wanted: new tracks, new skins, new 3D models for the cars. Now, if we don't like how an environment is played, we just keep it on the shelf and wait for several months for a new experience.Īlso Steam Workshop is another a sign of why the community just dropped from TM². Before, we could play on a variety of environments and gameplays and have our personal favourites (mine being Snow and Bay). They wanted to create a whole world of entertainment and experiences, but Nadeo is a small studio, and they just can't make that world live as the releases are way too spaced inbetween. Having met the creator of Trackmania at several occasions, he's really a great guy, but I think the Ubisoft politics truly killed the Trackmania spirit.

And we can still find it for free with Nations Forever (despite the server limitations). For something that used to be free back in the day. Just for the sake of integrating it to ManiaPlanet, they made it a $10 expansion with just 10 new blocks to an existing environment. TM² Stadium was the one which took the cake. 18 months between the release of Canyon and Valley. Then, when Maniaplanet was announced, everything started to break down: Nations Forever was deemed not viable anymore, the Freezones servers were established which was killing all the community around the game, then the politic to release one environment at a time did the rest. Which was even extended by the Forever expansion. Then United was released at the end of 2006 putting all 7 environments into one single game and giving it a great lifespan. Old Trackmania games (the original one and Sunrise) had 3 in one single package, while Stadium was free (TM Nations).
The problem with TrackMania² is they decided to release one environment at a time, with 18 months between each release.
